Editing

Purchasing an editing service may result in notes that more properly belong to one of the unpurchased editing services. If I notice that something could benefit from your attention, I will mention it in a note, free of extra charge. However, in order to guarantee a focused, sustained, and specific type of editing, please request that service when hiring me.

  • Proofreading ($0.025 per word)

This refers to ensuring grammar and basic sentence structure are clear and sensible. I include Proofreading free of charge when you hire me for any other editing job.

  • Line editing ($0.035 per word)

This refers to going line-by-line, making sure word choice is fitting, the writing is clear, and every line is absolutely necessary for the project. In fiction, one common casualty of line editing is extra dialogue.

  • Developmental editing ($35 per hour)

This refers to the logic and outline of a whole project. In fiction, developmental editing results in rearranged chapters and reveals; it also ensures that characters behave consistently (or at least believably) throughout.

  • Mechanical editing ($35 per hour)

This refers to formatting for publication. In academic writing, it includes finalizing all citations and bibliographic entries, ensuring that everything looks professional.

Indexing

  • $3 per page per index

When someone picks up a non-fiction book, one question they often have is “Will this book help me?” There’s no better way to answer that question than an index that highlights the topics discussed in the book. Indexes reveal more content than chapter titles, and they can also boost the sales of your book. I include free Proofreading when you purchase an Index from me.

  • $35 an hour
